  • You Can't Have Dry Coffee: Papa's Excuse to Have a Nosh and Nana's Perfect Pastries

“You can’t have dry coffee.” This was one my grandfather, Max’s, favorite sayings. Whether he was being ironic, or if something was lost in translation from Yiddish, I’ll never know. Max married my grandmother, Mollye in 1920. Like all from her generation, she made everything from scratch with real butter and whole-fat milk. I learned to bake from recipes handed down from Mollye to my mother, Ruth, and have developed some of my own to pass along to my children. This book is a compilation of our favorites.

Ironic or not, a cup of coffee needs a good nosh.

You Can’t Have Dry Coffee offers dozens of tasty recipes for what to have with your coffee.

From gefilte fish and prepared horseradish to charoset, chicken soup, and matzo balls, my family cooks from scratch—and often without a recipe. Growing up watching my mother add a handful of this and a dash of that, I’ve since gathered her memories into clear, easy-to-follow recipes.
